Uniforms Equipment Has Many Meanings
When we think of a uniform, we usually think that it is made up of several items of clothing. While clothing may be the basis of a uniform, the accessories and equipment that are worn with it can be just as important. Uniforms equipment is part of almost every modern uniform – just think of any iconic uniform, such as that of a doctor or a police officer and we can bring to mind the kind of items that are also important to that professional’s uniform.
In the world of sport, a player who is dressed appropriately for a match or game is still useless without the necessary uniforms equipment. For example, in the sport of softball pitchers cannot play without a pitchers’ glove and catchers are not fully dressed without a catchers’ mitt. Without these items, players attempting to catch the ball may incur an injury because it is travelling at great speed when it is stopped suddenly. Likewise, a referee cannot watch over a game without the proper accessories to influence the play: in soccer he needs red and yellow cards, and a flag and whistle to halt play and attract attention if he sees a foul.
Police officers may carry a variety of uniforms equipment. Their uniforms bear a metal badge which shows that they are a member of the police service. They often carry a baton for subduing those that they attempt to arrest who are uncooperative. In the United States, many police officers wear a firearm in a holster, usually a gun. In the UK, Ireland, Scandanavia and other countries, it is not routine for police officers to carry a gun. They can also be equipped with non-lethal weapons, such as riot control items like laughing gas and tear gas, rubber bullets and tasers or other electroshock weapons. Police officers usually carry a pair of handcuffs for making arrests.
Fire and rescue workers need uniforms equipment to aid them in their difficult and often dangerous job. They typically carry a communications device such as a radio, as well as tools for forcing entry into collapsed buildings, and flashlights of varying sizes for navigating areas in low light levels. They may also carry gloves, either for performing rescues or for medical examinations. They often use a megaphone to attract attention and to convey messages across distance or into hard-to-reach areas. Metal detectors and multi-tool devices may also be of use to them.
Medical personnel also make use of particular items as part of, or in addition to, their uniforms. For example, paramedics who travel to the site of accidents may carry uniforms equipment such as a kit for testing alcohol blood levels, a flashlight, sterile gloves for performing examinations, medical goggles to protect their eyes, antiseptic hand cleanser, a CPR mask or a splint. In a hospital, doctors typically wear a stethoscope for listening to patients’ heart-rates and breathing. Nurses may carry sterile gloves and face masks to protect them from contaminants and to keep medical environments hygienic. |
