Staff Uniforms

The World of Staff Uniforms

What comes to mind when you think of uniforms? No doubt some are more memorable than others. Perhaps you thought of a fireman’s uniform, or a nurse’s, or a receptionist’s. The variety of staff uniforms in today’s world of work is staggering. Uniforms convey a lot of information at a glance: the colour may tell you what industry the professional is from, and what role they play within it; a logo may tell you which corporation they represent.

In the healthcare profession, staff uniforms are some of the most immediately recognisable. Uniforms are used to distinguish different healthcare professionals from each other. Nurses usually wear loose white or blue clothes, often a blouse or a long tunic. Doctors are recognised by their white coats, which look similar to those worn by laboratory scientists, or their loose green “scrubs”. Paramedics usually wear green scrubs similar to those worn by doctors. It is very important that these staff are recognisable because of their different roles within the healthcare industry. Police uniforms are also highly recognisable. Indeed, they have become iconic in our culture, particularly in films and on television.

Most offices do not have a strict uniform but there are regulations which staff are expected to adhere to. This is so that the company appears professional to the public and to customers or clients who deal with it. Office staff are expected to dress smartly. Men usually wear a suit and a tie; women wear smart trousers or a skirt and a smart top. Some workplaces have a more relaxed dress-code. Others are strict enough with regulations that it can seem as though they are enforcing staff uniforms for their employees.

By introducing staff uniforms, you encourage your staff to act in a manner that is professional and invites respect. People wearing a common uniform are more likely to form a cooperative environment and to feel that they have common goals and interests. They will feel more confident, as a representative of your company. It encourages them to feel that they are supported by their fellow workers. The outcome of this is that your staff will be happier and more productive in their work, and these benefits will be passed on to your customers.

Staff uniforms also reduce untidy or inappropriate clothing in the workplace. Staff who are permitted to wear their own clothes are more likely to abuse this freedom. Some staff may be unclear as to what is appropriate. Others may knowingly flout convention. Bringing in a staff uniform prescribes what staff wear, introduces regulations and reduces the chance of a staff member standing out from the rest for the wrong reasons.

Choosing to introduce staff uniforms can be a very positive step. A uniform increases trust on the part of the customer or client. They are more likely to see staff-members as part of a wider company or industry and perceive them as more authoritative. They are far more likely to strike up the kind of rapport that good business deals rely upon.
