Shopping seems to be a way of life for many people. Not meaning to be stereotypical, but that is especially true for women.  There is an entire generation of shoppers raised on the premise of acquisition.  The buying process is quite complex from a psychological and emotional standpoint.  The end result of buying something may be arrived at by very different means and for very different motivations.  The process of choosing to buy from an online shirt company versus going out to a local boutique can be very difficult to understand.

One of the varying factors in understanding the choice of whether to buy from an online shirt store versus a local on-ground store will vary based on what the shopper is trying get from the experience.  In a vast majority of the cases, what the consumer is trying to get is not the shirt. Rather, they are trying to get emotional satisfaction from the buying experience.  Whether the consumer is more motivated by acquisition or the esteem they get from being a “good” shopper helps determine where and how they buy things.  If the person is in acquisition mode, they may run to the computer and buy something, almost anything will do. If they are in esteem mode, they will want to go to an on-ground store and immerse themselves in the experience and come out with the perfect shirt much as the artist creates a piece of art to express themselves.

The trend is slightly changing, however.  With more women becoming more adept at technology, they are getting more out of the cyber shopping experience.  They can go to their friends and let them know they got that same item cheaper at the online shirt company without ever getting dressed. Their acumen grows to legendary proportions among their peers, and not only that they can brag about how much else they got in the same time their peers drove to the mall and returned empty handed. 

So, why don’t all women or men, for that matter, shop at the online shirt company or online golf club company?  Part of that answer lies in how emotionally tied the shopper is to the tactile experience from which they derive their emotional pleasure.  The woman may want to feel the fabric or try on the piece for the thrill of how they look in the new conquest. The man may want to feel the weight of the club in the swing despite the fact that his clubs will only see the course about twice a year, and the more expensive clubs won’t save him one stroke.  The online shopper may be more of a thrill seeker getting their hopes up to be dazzled when the box arrives. They love the anticipation of the unknown acknowledging that the end result may be quite disappointing. The shirt may not fit, and the clubs may still slice to the right.

Remember, whether buying from the online shirt company or the local boutique, the prize is not the item, itself.  It is the experience that is being purchased.
