Hotels are special places. They become our homes for a few days or a week- perhaps longer depending on how long our vacations tend to be. They are our home, but they are much grander, more efficient, and filled with people who are there to make our time away from our jobs and everyday lives comfortable and fun. It would kill the effect of the great, open lobbies, hotel bars and restaurants if the hotel staff was attired as casually as many of the guests are nowadays. Bellboys have a very distinctive look. Indeed, when people think of hotel staff, the bellboy, clad in his short jacket and signature hat with strap, probably first comes to mind. Part of the reason for the uniform, including its often red color, is to make the bellboys easy to spot. But again, the whole hotel experience, the whole sense of being in a spacious, elegant place that caters to your needs, is enhanced by having a staff distinctively clad. Certainly, the bellboy look makes the desired impression.
The maitre' d and wait-staff of hotel restaurants wear hotel uniforms befitting the work they do. They, as well bartenders, wear a jacket and pants combination. The short jacket can be worn with a cumber bund. The shirt can be frilled or a more simple white shirt. Bowties or regular ties can be worn. The idea of these garments is to create a presence and convey a sense of efficiency.
