Embroidered Numbers on Your Uniforms
In sports played by teams, the player wears embroidered numbers on their uniform. These may be called shirt numbers, jersey numbers or squad numbers. They are used to identify an individual player and to distinguish them from all the other players on the field. In most sports, the jersey number to sports officials, other team players, the opposing team, and the scorers and umpires. It is typically worn on the back of the jersey. It may also signify the player’s position on the field. In some sports the player also wears their surname as an additional identifying sign. The player’s numbers may also appear on the front of their jersey, on its sleeves and on the player’s pants or shorts.
In soccer, embroidered numbers on the players’ jerseys used to correspond to their position on the field. The starting team players wore 1 to 11. Additional team players who may be subbed in wore numbers greater than 11. 1 was worn by the goalkeeper. Today, however, there is far more freedom in the numbers that players wear. In American football, the NFL has put in place a particular numbering system, so that the numbers that a player wears are based on his position on the field. The player must choose a number between a particular range based on their position. In American basketball, numbers of single or double digits between zero and 5 are used. In baseball, numbers are far less regulated, and players may become attached to a particular number. Likewise, there are no formal rules for players’ numbers in ice hockey.
The number that a player wears is therefore very meaningful. Players may choose to wear a particular number in honor of another player who wore that same number, or they may forgo wearing a number for the same reason. Players often have a lucky number which they prefer to wear on the field. In many sports, getting the right embroidered numbers on their jersey is an important recruiting ritual.
Sports teams, when purchasing customized team uniforms which embroidered numbers on them, must think carefully about the embroidered numbers that each player wears. In college and high school football, a great deal of number shuffling goes on, as players attempt to get their desired number. Many players believe that having the right number on their jersey will cause them to play better.
What is also important is that the jerseys which have the embroidered numbers stitched onto them are of good quality and are clear, so that there is no confusion between numbers. Most sports use numbers in a clear and simple font style. This means that they can be easily read. Numbers are usually embroidered in a large block style in bright colors, for maximum visibility. For example, on a red jersey players usually wear white or black numbers, and on blue jerseys they usually wear white or yellow numbers. A contrasting color to that of the player’s jersey is usually the most visible option for a player to wear.
