The Different Types of Embroidered Fonts

In modern typography, a font (sometimes called a “fount”) is generally defined as a complete set of characters that are written or typed in a uniform size and style to make up a certain font typeface. An embroidered font is therefore a set of uniform letters that can be stitched onto a piece of fabric, a garment or another appropriate material, either by hand or using a machine which has the font loaded into it. In modern typefaces, particularly roman-style ones, the embroidered font will have a style type that is most often linked to the angles of the lettering. When a normal, roman-style or upright font has a slanted angle – usually a slant toward the right in Western script – the lower-case character forms are also altered a little and become somewhat more similar to a cursive style like that of hand-writing.

Many online companies offering in-house embroidery services on garments and other personal fabric items will offer a large variety of fonts or type faces that are ready to be stitched onto fabric. These are the most commonly used fonts, so it makes sense for companies to keep them in stock for embroidery. These fonts can readily be employed for the embroidering of monograms, the embroidering of messages and the adding of lettering to embroidered emblems and motifs or logos.

If you want only embroidered text or lettering on your item, without any graphics, logos, designs, images or motifs on them, you have the advantage of not having to pay to have the design made or digitized on a computer. The only expense you will have to pay, apart from the cost of the garment if you are purchasing it new, is a one-time fee to have your text or message type-set. You can select any of the stock embroidery fonts and the company will set the lettering to your precise requirements in preparation for the piece being embroidered. Lettering set-ups include only type, letters and words, not graphics, icons or logos, and will be charged per set of letters sewn in the location of your choosing.

It is unfortunate that many of the stock fonts that companies keep on file can be a little bit generic and unexciting. They are often the simple fonts to set onto fabric and sometimes provide consistent results. If you have a more fancy type of lettering that you would like put onto your garment or fabric item, you will need to design your message for yourself and then have it digitized. The design will need to be as clear as possible so that it can be readily scanned into a computer, ready to be digitized to determine how to sew the letters onto the fabric.
