Apparel Definition
There are many different types of people in the world, and about as many different reasons for wearing apparel. Some people wear apparel to define or display their personality and uniqueness, other people wear apparel for a sense of belonging to a group. For many people in many different countries, the apparel that is worn shows or follows social traditions. If you look at an apparel definition however, you will also find that there is a basic commonality for all apparel as most of it is designed to protect the body from the elements such as the sun or the cold weather, as well as provide protection from the heat of cooking and other workplace hazards.
As part of the apparel definition there is also much leeway for the wearing of apparel in the form of uniforms as these show both the belonging to a group but also can represent an authority figure in a particular society, for example with police officers. In this case the apparel chosen is in the form of a uniform which is a decided code for that profession. Police officers are universally identifiable because of their uniform and it is definitely inappropriate and in fact illegal to wear a police uniform if you are not a member of the police. The uniform of course varies from county to county and from country to country. For other professions that wear a uniform however the code is not quite as strict.
Another example of how an apparel definition offers much leeway is in regular casual clothing for school and sometimes for work. Although many schools do have dress codes and some things, such as profanity on tee shirts, are often forbidden, otherwise there is a lot of room for personal expression in the choice of apparel that you choose. Again, depending on the time of year, your choices will also be partly determined by the weather, as well as comfort. You would not however wear something designed to be worn to a wedding to your high school classes as this would be inappropriate and you would stick out like a sore thumb.
One of the wonderful things these days is that with the internet it is becoming easier and easier for people to go beyond the usual apparel definition and search out truly unique items as well as items that belong to different cultures or social conventions. Using technology it is also very easy these days to customize your apparel by using silk screen or other apparel printing techniques and design for example your own tee shirt.
This is also true if you are looking for a work uniform as there are many styles, colours and fabrics available these days. If you are looking for example for a medical uniform, you will find that much of what is available is suitable for both men and women and you can choose between traditional styles as well as more contemporary styles. In this case the social code is set out in the apparel definition for example with scrubs that perform a purpose but there is still a small amount of leeway for personal deviation.
